Maria is founder of TransArtists, an internationally recognized platform stimulating and strengthening artists' mobility internationally. She started TransArtists in 1997 aiming to help artists by creating the first information platform for artists on artist-in-residence opportunities worldwide. Maria participated actively in many artists residency networks, was Secretary of the board of Res Artis (2000-2007) and President of the Board in 2007 and 2008. She coordinated the Dutch participation in the Pépinières Européennes pour Jeunes Artistes programs, was advisory board member of TransCultural Exchange (USA); board member and President of On-the-Move; and former board member of the Thami Mnyele Foundation, which runs a guest studio program for artists from African countries in Amsterdam. From 2008 through 2014, she was member of several European Open Method of Coordination (OMC) and expert groups on improving the conditions for the mobility of artists and other professionals in the cultural field.

Maria stepped down from DutchCulture | TransArtists per June 1st 2015 and started working as an independent advisor-consultant for various institutions, such as-until recently- BAK Utrecht: a base for art, theory, and social action which is committed to the notion of art as a public sphere and a political space, and provides a critical platform for aesthetico-political experiments with and through art. Until October Maria was board member of Farm of the World; a cultural project initiated by visual artist Claudy Jongstra for Leeuwarden European Cultural Capital 2018, that focuses on exploring new and sustainable futures for the countryside.

Currently Maria is member of the board of On The Move- France and Valley of the Possible.
